Physical Education (PE)

We give high priority to PE activities, recognising their worth for improving and developing ability skills, team work, confidence, independence and resilience. The children are taught to work on their own, with a partner and in a team.

Being offered these experiences allows children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It provides opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way that supports their health, fitness and well-being.

All classes participate in both indoor and outdoor PE. We follow the 'Get Set 4 PE' programme in school to ensure children are taught the necessary skills in all areas of PE: gross motor, gymnastics, dance and body movement including yoga, and games. A specialist dance teacher supports class teachers in delivering high-quality dance sessions, as well as running after-school clubs too. We also have Peterborough United deliver additional lessons and after-school clubs.

Swimming is also a statutory offer within our PE provision. All classes across KS1 and KS2 will have a half-termly block of swimming lessons at the local pool. Children will be taught to swim different strokes, as well as developing water confidence and water safety skills. Children are assessed at the end of Key Stage 2 against DFE requirements.

KS1 children are able to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination. They participate in team games, developing tactics for attacking and defending and can perform dances using simple movement patterns.

KS2 children will develop these skills and demonstrate improvements to achieve their personal best. They will take part in outdoor activity challenges.

Throughout the year, we offer a variety of after-school activities. Traditional sports such as football and basketball have been included so far, and sports such as Rounders and Dodgeball have also proven very popular as well. We value inter-school matches to aid healthy competition, and continue to look for ways to access this.

We encourage all children to take part in the Daily Mile, our 'Wake Up, Shake Up' Club, as well as active learning within lessons, as a way of promoting additional physical activity in school.

Children regularly take part in external sporting events with other schools within the Trust and the local cluster of schools. This is managed and overseen by our Lead PE TA, Mr Allen.
